A Day Full of Surprises Engagement Story

July 13, 2008 seemed like a regular Sunday morning, but the day was far from ordinary. A routine morning at church turned into the morning my life changed. As I left the Sunday morning service that day, someone introduced himself to me in the parking lot. I’m a polite lady so I gave him a friendly greeting since he offered one. When I left that day, I told my friends about “the guy” I met in the parking lot. Little did I know that guy would become my husband.

During the next couple of weeks, we were sure to greet each other at church when we saw one another. Each encounter got a tiny bit longer until several weeks later he said the magic words. “Do you mind if I call you sometimes?” Well sure!  I was pretty excited about it, but I remained cool. I casually jotted down my telephone number in his notebook and gave him a piece of paper for his.

That was the beginning of a great friendship. With no mention of a relationship, we chatted on the phone and lingered a little longer at church for in-person conversations. When we missed each other by phone, we communicated via MySpace (yes… it was that long ago). We inquired about each other’s day and talked about some of our plans for the future. Finally, a month after the telephone number exchange we finally worked up the nerve to hang out at our local waterfront. Finally, in person, we had the chance to have an in-person conversation. That’s when I knew I really wanted to be his friend.

As time progressed, we did just that. Slowly but surely, our friendship grew. We talked every day. We developed little jokes that were only funny to us, and on my 27th birthday he gave me a journey necklace and a letter. He was looking forward to the journey he would spend getting to know me more and more every day.

Months later, we finally decided to pick up the boyfriend/girlfriend title, but not before becoming best friends first. That’s the best thing we could have ever done.

My 27th birthday was a defining moment,  and other awesome birthdays followed. My 29th birthday was a surprise trip to New York City. My 30th birthday included a diamond ring!

It was a Thursday and we both took the day off from work. I love surprises do I didn’t ask what he had planned. We drove for hours that day to a neighboring state four hours away. I had no idea what was in store. After getting caught in traffic, we final arrived at a harbor. A birthday boat ride? I loved the idea! When we got to the pier, he grabbed my purse while asking for his keys. As soon as my hands were free he dropped to one knee. Imagine the shock! Before he uttered a word, a photograph appeared and began working to capture every moment. Of course, I said yes! With my knees shaking and my heart racing, we walked to the edge of the pier to prepare for a private boat ride. This boat ride included sparkling cider and chocolate covered strawberries. Dinner followed at one of the nicest restaurants at the harbor. Imagine that ride back home and imagine the shock of the day. Not only did I have a milestone birthday, but I ended up getting engaged!
